Dry country

"Although the West has gone through natural wet and dry cycles in the past, the current water flow trends differ significantly in length and in strength from natural variations in the past, the researchers conclude." That's from the a summary of an article in a recent issue of Science, "Human-Induced Changes in the Hydrology of the Western United States," (pdf) where Tim Barnett of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego and colleagues report that "up to 60 percent of the changes in river flow, snow pack and winter air temperatures in the region during this period can be attributed to human-caused climate change."

Following up on Halloween cancellation from last year...

Happy St. Valentines Day!

However, it has been cancelled at my daughter's Lutheran School, as it is a Christian Origin Holiday.

The soviets are winning in the battle to eradicate any hint of religiosity from everyday life.

(in an anti-soviet rebellion, my daughter made valentine cards on the inner labels of canned food, which we pasted back together and then passed the clandestine cans to her classmates)

I appreciate the soviet reference, but I tend to assign such things to Stupid Educator Syndrome. Nothing will make religion so appealing as an attempt to suppress it; and if Christopher Hitchens is any guide, nothing will make religion so appalling as an attempt to enforce it. This isn't a slam on religion; the same principle applies (in my experience) to physical education as well.
